Spending a week in Zurich, Switzerland at Christmas time with Robin Sharma and the gang at The Titan Summit 2016 was game changing. At the first invitation, I signed up immediately and booked my flight. It is Christmas in magical Zurich after all! The line up of speakers took my breath away. I was ready to become a Titan. Steve Wozniak, Mike Abrashoff, Jim Donald, Dr Greg Wells, Dr James Rouse, Kennedy Odede, Lisa Bentley, Sean Stephenson, Phillip Mc Kernan, Ian Lopatin, Alex Charfen, and of course Mr Robin Sharma himself. I learned so much from all of them and took notes as if my life depended upon it. Surprisingly, a lot of the speakers shared keynotes on Biohacking and Spirituality. Right up my alley! I will share my learnings from these experts in future blogs.
This blog piece is intended for COMMOTION’s technology and well being categories. It’s a super cool device called the HumanCharger – a gift to all the Titans. I have been using it religiously ever since. Invented in Finland, the HumanCharger is a light therapy device that sends a UV-free blue-enriched white light through to the light-sensitive regions of the brain. Who knew that this is where light is needed the most?
The biggest advantage of the HumanCharger is its ease of use. It fits in my pocket and I can use it anywhere. It is rechargeable with approximately twelve sessions per charge and I only need to use it for twelve minutes per day. I simply put the LEDSet earbuds into my ears and press the power button, at which point bright light flows through to my ear canals. Recent discoveries have shown that the surface of the brain has photosensitive receptors, much like those located in the retina of the eye. They can be accessed by light flowing through the ear canal using bright light therapy. When these photosensitive areas of the brain are activated, chemical compounds (Serotonin, Dopamine and Noradrenaline) are released to increase energy levels, improve mood and increase mental alertness.
I can attest to feeling all the benefits. But then again, I also meditate two or three times a day, I exercise regularly, I control my emotions as a discipline and am conscious of my diet and the peer group I hang around. Every morning upon waking, I roll over, grab my little HumanCharger and meditate with it plugged in my ears. The device automatically turns off after exactly 12 minutes. My husband confirms that using HumanCharger each day has helped him him to feel more calm, more meditative, more Zen.
What’s the research? Between 2008-2010, Researchers at the University of Oulu, Finland, discovered that in addition to eyes, areas of the human brain are also sensitive to light. This sensitivity is due to the photoreceptor-proteins in the brain, which are similar to those found in the eyes, a discovery that had been made by researchers in the U.K. and the U.S. 10 years earlier. University of Oulu researchers found that brain areas can be reached by light through ear canals, ear tissues and bone skull. The skull of large mammals, including humans, lets light pass through naturally. In ordinary daylight and daytime conditions, the brain is constantly being exposed to light. Ear light activates neural networks of the human brain and improves cognitive performance.
What’s interesting is the profound affect a little sun on our brain can have on our Health and Well Being. In particular, the treatment of the Winter Blues, Jet Lag and Shift Work recovery. HumanCharger can alleviate symptoms such as irritability, loss of interest in activities you usually find enjoyable, feeling of worthlessness or hopelessness, oversleeping, loss of energy, social withdrawal, decreased physical activity, fatigue, cravings for foods that are high in carbohydrates, and weight gain. It is recommended to use the HumanCharger on a regular basis in the morning once a day within two hours of waking up at the same time each day.
For those of us who travel often, this little device is a godsend. When travelling eastward, I use it first thing in the morning and early afternoon, four times during the day at two hour intervals. 8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm local time. For westward flights, I use it late afternoon to evenings, four times a day at two hour intervals. 3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm. I repeat everyday until I feel recovered.
